When you first start your journey into entrepreneurship it can feel like other business owners are speaking a different language. Often times we can be discouraged or overwhelmed trying to understand what people are saying so we can know what we need to help our business.

Below I have compiled a list of the 50 most common terms that I have come across when running my business or advertising my brand. Learning these terms have taken the stress out of marketing and allowed me to focus on results. I hope this list will help you too!

1. A/B Testing

Comparing two variations of a webpage or advert delivered to the same audience. A/B testing is used to improve elements on your site or to compare different elements in your ads.

2. Advertising

Communicating your company’s message in the hopes of generating sales or brand awareness.

3. Analytics

Metics used to measure your business performance. Analytics involves tracking data to find patterns that may increase your overall workflow and sales. Data can come from places like your website, social media sites, or third party services.

4. Artificial Intelligence (A.I)

A computer or software system that operates independently from humans. In a digital age, A.I manages a lot of the “learning” behind some of the programs we use.

5. Backlink

An incoming hyperlink from another web page to to your site website. Backlinks from trusted sites improve your website’s SEO and search ranking.

6.Blog

A regularly updated website or webpage featuring articles and discussions. Most blogs are conversational or informational. Blogging can be a key factor in driving qualified traffic and leads to your website.

7. Bounce / Bounce Rate

Bounce refers to a website visiter leaving your site rather than taking another action. Your bounce rate will represent the percentage of total visitors who leave your site after a certain amount of time or at a certain page/location.

8. Brand

Your brand is the identity and feel of your company. It includes terms , designs, symbols or any other feature that identifies one seller's good or service as distinct from those of other sellers.

9. Business - To - Business (B2B)

Marketing or selling products and services to another business

10. Business - To- Customer (B2C)

Marketing or selling products and services directly to consumers.

Refers to the process buyers go through after discovering your brand. The three stages of the buyer’s journey are AwarenessConsideration and Decision

12. Click Through Rate (CTR)

Measures the number of people moving through your website. It’s the “clicks” or actions visitors take, divided by the total number of actions people could take

13. Content

Content is “something to be expressed through some medium as speech, writing, or any of various arts”. In terms of your business your content are the pieces of intellectual property you put online. Content includes blogs, videos, pictures, interviews, and even memes.

14. Content Marketing

Content marketing is presenting your brand through the content you publish and not through traditional sales techniques. Content marketing is about educating your customers/ audience through regular content post and using them to generate traffic and engage your audience.

15. Conversion Rate

The percentage of people who take a desired action or complete a task. Most commonly you will see your conversion rate referenced to your web sales. In this case your conversion rate will be the number of customers who reached checkout compared to your total site visitors.

16. Cost Per Click (CPC)

Used when advertising as a metic for measuring ad cost. CPC refers to the actual price you pay for each click in marketing campaigns. Ideally you would like you CPC to be as low as possible to optimize your campaign budget. You will see CPC most often when using Facebook Ads and Google Adwords.

17. Ebook

An ebook is an electronic or digital version of a book. Ebooks are often used in lead generation and be a great way to gather emails for your business

18.Ecommerce

The act of buying and selling through the internet.

19. Email / Email Marketing

“Electronic Mail” or email is a way of sending and receiving messages through electronic devices. Email marketing involves sending strategic messages directly to target audiences via email with the purpose of educating, engaging, and/or encouraging them to take a specific action.

20. Engagement / Engagement Rate

The amount of interaction your content gets. Engagement can be likes, comments, shares, or even clicks. Engagement rates are often used when running ads and express the amount of people who engaged with your campaign compared to the total number of people who your ad was shown to.

21. Gated Content

Content that can not view or download until a person has entered contact information, usually their email. Gated content is used is a key component in lead generation.

22. Facebook

Social media platform commonly used by businesses to run advertisements to their customers. Facebook’s retargeting capabilities allow companies to re-market to people who have previously engaged with their brand or visited their website

23. Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a free web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic. It is a powerful platform that provides valuable insights that can help you to shape the success strategy of your business.

24. Hashtag

A symbol expressed as “#”. Hashtags are used to tie together conversations and content on social media. Users can search for and discover content using hashtags even if they do not follow the person or brand that posted it. Using hashtags can be a great way to get people to discover your content and become followers.

25. Hubspot

HubSpot is an inbound marketing and sales platform that helps companies to attract visitors, convert leads and close customers. It does this by bringing together a variety of tools and allowing marketing and sales departments to manage all their activities in one place.

26. Inbound Marketing

Inbound marketing is another term used for “content marketing”. It involves presenting your brand through the content you publish and not through traditional sales techniques in an effort to draw customers into your brand.

27. Influencer Marketing

Influencer marketing is a form of social media marketing involving endorsements and product placement from users, people, and organizations who have a purported expert level of knowledge or social influence in their field. While costly, hiring an influencer for to promote your brand or products can have a very high return on your investment.

A visual representation of data or information presented clearly to inform or educate the viewer. Infographics are usually graphs. Infographics are effective because they combine the written word with visual elements to pack big ideas into small spaces

29. Instagram

A social media platform where users can share pictures and short form videos. Instagram is a popular resource for business owners as you ca run retargeting advertisements to users who have interacted with your brand. Instagram is also a popular space for influencers who can promote your products and services for a fee.

30. Keyword

Also referred to as "keyword phrases", keywords are the topics and that webpages get indexed for in search results by engines like Google, Yahoo, and Bing. You can think of keywords as the words and phrases people will search to find your brand. Keywords are also used on ecommerce sites like Amazon and Walmart.com .

31. KPI

Short for “Key Performance Index”, KPIs are measurements used to track the success of a campaign or employee. Examples of KPIs include Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC), blog traffic sources, and homepage views.

32. Landing page

A landing page is webpage with a form or offer for a particular product or service. Landing pages are often used to generate leads. Landing page can also refer to the page in which a website visitor enter your site.

33. Lead

A person who had shown interest in a product or service your company offers. Leads are different than visitors in that they have usually further engaged with your company by filling out a form, subscribing to a blog, or sharing their contact information in exchange for a ebook.

34. Linkedin

Linkedin is a social media platform focused on business networking. B2B businesses can take advantage of Linkedin to gain more clients

35. Marketing

37. Offer

When marketing your business, an offer refers to a discount or special promotion extended to your customers.

38. Outbound Marketing

Outbound marketing is a traditional method of marketing seeking to obstruct potential customers. Outbound marketing includes activities such as trade shows, seminar series and cold calling. It is costly and the ROI is much lower than inbound marketing.

39. Page View

An instance of a page being loaded (or reloaded) in a browser. Put plainly, page views let you know how many people have viewed your webpages. Increasing your pageviews is usually at the top of any marketing strategy.

40.Pay Per Click (PPC)

PPC is an advertising system that refers to the advertiser being charged every time a visitor clicks on their ad. Facebook, google, and amazon all use the PPC model when charging for advertisements.

41. Press Release

A press release is a news article announcement about your company or brand. You can run a press release for a number of reasons including launching a new product or service, having a sale, adding a new team member, or announcing a collaboration. Scheduling regular press releases is a great way to improve your search ranking and website SEO.

42. Referral

A prospect or lead generated from someone outside of your company. Referrals are usually customers or people highly interested in your brand. As referrals are usually a low cost way to obtain new customers, it is wise to build in a culture of “spreading the word” with your audience. 

43. Return on Investment (ROI)

ROI is a way of measuring the money you get back from a campaign or product compared to the amount of money you put in. ROI can commonly be referred to simply as “profit”, however ROI can be negative and generally when people speak of “profit” it is a positive return against the investment.

44. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO are the actions you take to improve your site’s search ranking and visibility. SEO is not one specific action but a series of actions, strategies, and policies that collectively improve your brand’s ranking. 

45. Social Media

Platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat that help users connect and share. Business owners can use these networks to increase brand awareness, grow their customer base, run advertisements, and even make sales.

46. Social Proof

Social proof is the perception to your visitors that others like and support your brand. Social proof is a way of putting your money where your mouth is. You can achieve social proof through online reviews, word-of-mouth, following count, or through “as seen on” features.

47. Target Marketing

A way of marketing your products or services to a specific group of customers which has been identified to fits the ideal democratic it is trying to reach. 

48. Twitter

A social media platform where users can share short form messages with their audience. Twitter can be a great way to put a voice and personality behind your brand. Many brands also use twitter as a quick way to answer questions, troubleshoot, and stay connected with their customers. 

49. Website

Your website is the “home base” for your business. Your website is a blank canvas and can be built to service your business. Having a website attached to your business unlocks a world of opportunities for business owners and is suggested as one of the first steps when starting a new brand.
